Welcome to the Greater Fredericksburg Area!

The greater Fredericksburg area encompasses the City of Fredericksburg and the adjacent counties of Stafford and Spotsylvania, plus the surrounding counties of Caroline, King George, Westmoreland and Orange.

Growth in the Fredericksburg Area

Few places in America have grown more over the past 15 years than the Fredericksburg region. In the 1990s, a whopping 23 people a day, on average, moved into the area. The growth has continued into this decade.
Newcomers face the tedious chore of figuring out how to settle in, legally and practically. They have phones to hook up, trash to dispose of and cars to register. This guide is by no means all-inclusive, but it is meant to help new residents cross some basic chores off their to-do lists.

Location and Surrounding Areas

Located midway between three major metropolitan areas (50 miles South of Washington, D.C., 45 miles South of Alexandria, and 50 miles North of Richmond VA) the Fredericksburg area offers the advantages of hometown living as well as the opportunities of big city life. The low cost of housing in the area and low tax rates, along with easy commuting possibilities make Fredericksburg a popular choice for people working in Washington and Richmond.  Located on the Interstate 95 corridor and served by the Virginia Railway Express, commuter train, Amtrak, and Greyhound bus service, most points of the area are within a one hour drive, or ride, of three major airports.

In addition to the moderate climate, you will find abundant cultural and recreational opportunities, along with medical and educational facilities that all contribute to the area’s appeal. Along with Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, there are two hospitals currently under construction. The first is set to open in 2009 in the Stafford Area; the second is set to open in 2010 in the Massaponax area of Fredericksburg.

Fredericksburg also offers multiple shopping experiences such as Central Park, Spotsylvania Towne Center, Harrison Crossing, Southpoint and Southpoint II, and Cosner's Corner. Recreational activities such as hiking, fishing, water skiing, sailing, swimming, tennis, golf and family outings take advantage of the surrounding abundance of rivers, lakes, beaches, parks and rural areas.

Old Town Fredericksburg

While you’re here visit Old Town Fredericksburg, the home of Mary Washington University as well as the boyhood home of George Washington, were you can indulge yourself in the charms of yesteryear. Stroll down the tree lined, brick sidewalks under color awnings while taking in the historic store fronts.

Traditional customer service can be found in the more than 120 small businesses that include intimate  boutiques and specialty shops, local artist galleries, antiques and collectibles, charming restaurants and a farmers market every Saturday. You can even take a tour in a horse drawn carriage; or if you are feeling adventurous you can tour the "haunted" district by trolley. For a family friendly competition, see if you can find all the “Pawsitivelly Fredericksburg!" statues, each with its´ own distinctive paint job.  While you’re in town, don’t forget to stop at Carl’s World Famous Ice Cream for homemade ice cream, it’s a local tradition.

Annual Events

The Fredericksburg area also offers several annual events including: the Annual Children’s Art Expo, The Mary Washington Multicultural Fair, Student and Senior Exhibitions, First Friday, Film Festivals, Antique Auto & Tractor Shows, a Welsh Festival, the Rappahannock River fest, Music by Moonlight, Blues in the 'Burg, Jazz Festivals, Barbeque Fest, Lunch at Hurkamp Park, St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas Parades, Historic Home Tours, along with numerous reenactments for the history buffs.

Nearby Attractions

Near by attractions include: Paramount's Kings Dominion, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA in Williamsburg, a Flying Circus Air Show in Fauquier, James Madison's Home, Montpelier, in Orange, The Marine Corps Museum at Quantico, and many local wineries.
